Need a quick fix to unclogging your sink?

We all love to go back after a tiring day to a place we call home, where we are sure that there would be no surprises and everything would be as they are supposed to be. But not everything is as we want them to be. Plumbing problems, especially clogged outlets can create a whole lot of hygiene issues. This article is brought to you by a plumbing company in Lebanon, TN. They have been in the plumbing industry for years and can give you their insights on how to proceed with DYI methods for clearing your drains.

Here are the 4 best ways to unclog that stubborn sink that you can do yourself.

Method #1

Using a plunger – In case the sink has an overflow drain, first seal the same by using duct tape of any other indigenous method of stopping water from flowing out. This will help stop the force that would otherwise leak out of the overflow hole and the process will not work. Remove the drain plug out of the sink. Once this is done, take a cup plunger. Ensure that this has a flat bottom. Position the cup over the clogged drain and seal the drain properly. Once this is done, push the plunger hard and pull it back immediately. Repeat this process till the force created dislodges the material causing the clog. This will enable the sink to start draining. Once the trapped water is drained, flush it with hot water to clear any remaining blockage. Post this is done, replace the plug over the drain and unseal the overflow drain.

Method #2

Using vinegar and baking soda – an easy method to unclog a stopped drain is with some ingredients that are easily available at home. Everyone uses vinegar and baking soda. Pour half cup vinegar and half cup baking soda into the drain. The amount will differ on the intensity of the clogging. Please note that the mixture will foam and might rise. Immediately after pouring the vinegar and baking soda into the drain, plug the hole and fill the sink with water. Wait for a couple of hours and pull the plug. The pressure of the water will force the clog to flush out of the drain.

Method #3

Using a wire –at times, there might be some debris or grease clogging the drain, especially the stubborn and the knotty kind. In such scenarios, pour half cup salt and half cup baking soda into the clogged drain. Then pour a large pot of boiling water into the drain. The salt will help break down the grease or the debris and the hot water will soften it. Then take a metal clothes hangar or any other thick metal wire that is available at home and straighten it. Insert one end of the wire into the drain and twist it in counter-clockwise motions to dislodge any pieces of debris stuck inside. You can also twist the end of the wire into a small hook to catch hold of any bigger piece of debris. For stubborn clogs, it is usually recommended to remove the bent piece of pipe that joins the sink outlet to the kitchen drain. Place a bucket under the pipes below the sink to catch the draining clog.

Method #4

Using a commercial cleaner – there are a lot of commercial chemical based cleaners available in the market that are easy to use. Empty the material down the drain (the amount to be used, will be specified in the instructions for use on the packing) and let it stand for a while. Pour water into the drain and the chemical will dissolve and wash the clog out of the drain. But using chemical based cleaners you need to be careful and aware of whether the particular product will be harmful to your skin, etc. or the plumbing. Ensure that you are aware of what you are using.
